1. A Good Call To Action
Absolutely vital for strong outdoor advertising is a good call to action. This is one of those graphic design tips that can be applied to various different brand awareness efforts, from website landing pages to brochure designs and everything in between.
A good call to action is particularly important for outdoor advertising materials because there’s no point in grabbing somebody’s attention with beautiful design work, and that being the end of the matter.
You need to not only hook them in, but send them in the right direction so you can convert their attention into sales or enquiries.
Even a simple phone number, social media channel, or website will do the trick, you just need something to motivate a customer into action.
2. USE Legible Typefaces
Another incredibly important top tip for outdoor advertising design is having readable, legible fonts.... or typefaces as designers call them.
It sounds simple, but with outdoor advertising you’re wanting to get that instant reaction from potential customers. You can catch attention in a number of ways, but if people can’t read what you’re saying, it’s pretty pointless.
So, don’t use complicated, fancy fonts or too many different fonts in your design, and make sure everything looks neat and tidy rather than cluttered.
Keeps things correctly capitalised where possible (it’s easier on the eye from a psychological perspective), with block letters to attract people’s attention. Also increase letter size for emphasis or increased visibility.
3. LeSS IS MORE
This is key with design in general and couldn’t be truer for outdoor advertising. Potential customers aren’t spending an age looking at your design in an outdoor setting, so you need to get to the point and do it quickly.
Use the five second rule as a guide – If you can’t work out what it is you’re offering in five seconds, shorten your message.
The trick is to make your message clear and concise and not too long, so that it can be absorbed rather than ignored at a glance.
4. USE COLOURS THAT WORK
Colours are vital for outdoor advertising, so you need to get them right.
Firstly, this means utilising contrast effectively with the foreground and background. Make sure the two elements don’t blend in to one, which makes the foreground difficult to read and the background too difficult to decipher.
Bright and vibrant colours that complement each other are always a good idea, and will help you draw attention from a crowd of potential customers.
But make sure the colours don’t clash or it could be a recipe for an outdoor advertising disaster.
And finally, imagery.
Imagery is absolutely vital when it comes to outdoor advertising, because for the most part, the image is what catches people’s attention when they’re out and about, getting on with their everyday lives.
Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words, so use the power of a simple and attractive image to your advantage.
Make sure your imagery is clear and supports your marketing message, so you don’t distract from what it is you’re offering.

2020 has been a rollercoaster year for many reasons, from a global pandemic to Brexit, Trumpism to Boris, and everything in between. It’s been unpredictable to say the least, so we can only hope that 2021 offers some stability for businesses and people around the country, and indeed the world.
So, let’s say goodbye to 2020 and look forward to 2021, and what better way to greet the new year than to look ahead at some new design trends.
That’s exactly what I’ve done with this month’s blog – got my crystal ball out and taken a look at some of the top trends that look set to dominate the graphic design world in the coming year.
Let’s start with colour tones…
1. Muted, relaxed colour tones and palettes
Bright, bold colours look to take somewhat of a backseat in 2021, with muted tones and low saturation looking to make an impact.
We’ve already seen this trend pop up throughout 2020 everywhere from fashion to business branding, and it only looks to continue as we head into the new year.
Perhaps it’s down to the craziness of 2020, and everybody just feels the need to sit back and relax, rather than being bombarded with too much sensory overload.
To be fair, it has been quite a long, tiring year, so it kind of makes sense.
2. Simplified, Visual Data
Infographics have been popular in recent years, and this trend looks set to continue into 2021.
Everything is digitalised and quantified in today’s world, and consumers need a simple and easy way to digest information. This, partnered with the need to stand out among a crowded marketplace, means that infographics and well-represented data will be a top priority for brands in 2021.
This will come in the form of video and static graphics, and will help brands communicate complex figures in a simple way to consumers.
3. Classic, Serif Fonts
Serif fonts date back 5 centuries, and are often seen as classic, elegant, and simple.
Following in the same vein as simplified, easy to read infographics and muted colours, next year is set to be a year of understated grace, rather than anything overly loud or bombastic.
Again, I think this is somewhat down to the fact that this year has been so crazy, that 2021 is going to be a bit like a hangover Sunday. All anyone wants to do is sit back and relax while we try and forget everything that went on last night, or in our case, last year!

Videos are huge in today’s digital world, especially with the ever-growing popularity of social media and smart phone users.
Almost all videos you see online include subtitles of some kind today, so a key feature of 2021’s video landscape is set to be focussed around bringing these words to life in a more visually appealing way.
Text-based videos are also much easier to create and since working remotely is a trend that looks set to become somewhat of the norm, many videographers will be offering text-based videos for the benefit of the consumer.
The fact that they won’t be able to leave the house to film as much as they might have previously might also play a part.
